Proverb: Hemp in celebration of grey hair, which is used in wedding vows

Description: Woman with strands of hemp (asa, )

Hiragana: Wo (), No. 12[BP1]

Kanji: (hemp)

NOTE: “Hemp in celebration of grey hair” is used in wedding vows.  It alludes to the ability of hemp to take any dye–a metaphor for a woman’s capacity to conform to her husband’s wishes.  I am grateful to Ferenz Jacobs of the Hash, Marihuana & Hemp Museum in Barcelona for information about this print.

Another state with a green foreground and yellow in the text cartouche

Another state with a plain foreground and a purple band on top

This state is missing both the cartouche in the right upper corner and the seal of the publisher Arita-ya Seiemon.  The seal in the left lower corner is probably a collector’s seal.
